We began this unit by mind mapping ideas and talking through the reasons why people don’t wear helmets, specifically when cycling, and why current safety advertisements haven’t made a big enough impact to change peoples minds. Over our lives we felt we had been exposed to a number of scare tactic advertisements that use fear to try and persuade people to think about safety first. This constant exposure of ‘shocking’ footage begins to become less and less shocking, desensitising us to what would be a very graphic video due to repeatedly showing the same concept over and over again.
We started to think of the reasons why people wouldn’t wear helmets. Questioning people, specifically between our age, we found that people did not wear helmets because they looked stupid, they ruin your hair, or because they were inconvenient ( you would have to carry it around with you afterwards.) We found that it affected people more around our age group because people of these ages seem to care more about their appearances.
These are the elements that we used to create the helmet. I photographed my cycling helmet and took pictures of flowers. I then digitally manipulated them on photoshop to create the different styles of helmets. We were thinking of making the helmets by hand and presenting them as a product, but within the given timeframe we felt that we would not meet the deadline.
